but just general advice I would give is: choose lighter and less saturated colors for the background. If you look around in real life, you will notice that the further you look, the more blue-ish and brighter it gets. (has to do with all the molecules in the air and stuff ) If you apply that in your painting, it will certainly evoke the wanted depth.
